La Madonna longe la côte Ouest de Malte.

Once again, the team was divided into two because the Malta Maritime Authority (MMA) agreed to lend us the Madonna Ta-Pinu for another day, thus enabling us to finish the survey at Gnejna Bay and Michael Spiteri joined us on this beautiful day.

We needed to carry out ten lines in order to complete the survey. The fine weather permits the vessel to be taken close to shore. Inside the bay we detected about 12 anomalies. To respect the working hours of the mariners we set sail from Gnejna at 1300 to be back at port at 1600. Upon our return we note the busy shipping traffic in and out of the Freeport.

In the meantime, the divers strated to work with the dredge and put down a baseline. We decided to excavate a test trench to try and locate the wreck. The trench measured about 75cm wide and the efficiency of the pump enabled work to progress rapidly.

The Madonna returned to port and it was now time to pack away the material. Once this was done we loaded it onto a van and transported them to the stores of the MMA at Valletta.

We also held a meeting with the Superintendence of Cultural Heritage and received the formal permits for our archaeological expedition.
