Malta Island, June 5th, 2004. In the morning, all the team met at the apartment at Mellieha. The dining room was transformed into a lecture hall. Max gave a general lecture on the world’s magnetic field and the parameters that effect signals picked up by the magnetometer. Joe Guesnon spoke about the excavation of the d’Omonville wreck at Cherbourg between 1980 and 1988.
After a cold lunch we drove to Vittoriosa to visit the town and the Maritime Museum. On the display at the museum is one cannon from the wreck at Torri L-Abjad. It may be a good idea to use the magnetometer to try and find the wreck. Along the quay we observe where the navy of the Knights of St John used to moor. It has now been transformed into a marina. We then visited fort St Angelo from where the Grand master La Vallette fought the Great Siege in 1565. In order to carry out the magnetometer survey at Torri L-Abjad we had to go to retrieve our equipment from the Freeport. We got clearance to enter the restricted area and proceeded to the Madonna Ta’Pinu to pack the equipment. |
