Malta Island, June 14th, 2004.
Late morning we are visited by Wilfred, one of the original divers to have worked on the site. He was also one of the divers that lifted the cannons from this site. He brought along his scrap book with all the press cuttings related to the work done on the wreck over 40 years ago. He could not help us identify the exact site of the wreck so we continued excavating test trenches.
Two ferrous concretions of about 25cm were found with an exterior diameter of 14cm. The density of the concretions give a clear indication as to the presence of the wreck. The seaside huts are not occupied except for a few permanent residents. One of these. Philip, is very nice and allows us to use his boathouse to make coffee. His abode is perfectly kept and is adorned with photos of his grandchildren. |
