Malta Island, June 12th, 2004.

Conference by Timmy Gambin.

As usual, Saturday is dedicated to lectures and site visits.

By 09:00 am, all the students are present at Mellieha.

The first lecture is by Timmy Gambin who explains the subject of his doctoral thesis which he is to submit to Bristol University later this year. He focuses on the maritime landscapes from the Roman period to the Middle Ages.

Martine Sciallano later delivered an excellent lecture on amphorae using examples from her book Comment reconnaître les amphores, written in collaboration with Patricia Sibella. Martine also spoke about her experience in the excavation of dolia wrecks.

Visit of the Museum of Archaeology of Gozo.

After the lectures we all depart to catch the Gozo ferry. We visit the citadel at Victoria and the Gozo museum of archaeology which houses a collection of amphorae from the wrecks of Xlendi Bay.

Some focused visitors

We drive around the secondary roads of the island and discover the arid landscape and the small villages built of limestone. We also visit Xleni on the west coast, a fjord-like harbour cut into the cliffs.

We return to Malta late that evening so that our Maltese friends can vote in the European elections !
